Winter Weather
As the weather begins to get colder, please send your student to school with a coat, hat, gloves, etc. If there is snow, students should also have snow gear such as boots and snow pants to enjoy the snow during recess. We will go outside unless the Real Feel temperature is below 19 degrees. We are also resharing the letter from Dr. Williams regarding Emergency Closures due to weather below.

Tardies
Reminder that school begins at 8:20. Any students arriving to school after 8:20 are considered tardy and must be signed in by a parent.
The colder weather usually leads to more cars in the car line, so make sure you give yourself enough time in the mornings.

Winter Themed Math Activities & Ideas
Here are some engaging, winter-themed math activities that you can consider sending home with students:
1. Winter Pattern Hunt
Encourage kids to create or identify patterns using holiday decorations like ornaments, wrapping paper, or lights. For example:
-
Alternate red and green ornaments in a sequence.
-
Explore symmetry in snowflakes or folded paper decorations.
2. Baking Math
Turn baking into a math lesson! Students can:
-
Measure ingredients to practice fractions and conversions.
-
Double or halve a recipe to work on multiplication and division.
-
Calculate baking times for multiple trays.
3. Snowflake Symmetry Challenge
Provide paper and scissors for kids to cut their own snowflakes, focusing on symmetry. Ask them to predict and then check how many lines of symmetry their designs have.
4. Gift-Wrapping Geometry
Ask students to calculate the area of wrapping paper needed for various gift box shapes. For older students, introduce the concept of surface area and challenge them with irregularly shaped gifts.
5. Counting Down with a Math Advent Calendar
Create an advent calendar with daily math puzzles or riddles leading up to a holiday. Each day could feature a math fact, problem, or activity to solve.
6. Estimate the Jar
Fill a clear jar with small holiday items (candy canes, jingle bells, gumdrops). Have students estimate the number inside and explain their reasoning. Use this to introduce concepts of estimation and volume.
7. Winter Break Math Journal
Encourage students to keep a math journal over the break. Each day, they can write about a real-world math connection, like budgeting for gifts, calculating travel distances, or counting steps during a holiday walk.
8. Build a Snowman with Math
If it’s snowy, encourage kids to measure the height and diameter of their snowman and calculate its volume or circumference. For non-snowy areas, use paper or felt snowmen and add math challenges like measuring angles or comparing sizes.

Morning Arrival Procedures
It is important for all students to arrive on time and ready to learn every morning. In order to ensure students are safely in the building and ready to begin their day, we ask families to be here before the 8:15 bell rings. In the event that your student arrives later, we have procedures in place in make sure they get the information they need to start the day. Any students arriving after the 8:20 bell are officially tardy to school. Families MUST sign them in for the day. We have all students waiting until after our daily announcements to get to their classrooms. Thank you for your support in getting your students to school on time!
Lost and Found Items
We have plenty of items in our Lost and Found that are looking for their owners. If your student is missing something, please encourage them to check out the items on the tables outside of the office. These things will also be out for families to look at during conferences as well.
Changes in Your Student's Dismissal Plans?
While it is always helpful to inform your student's teacher, we ask that familes also always contact the office. There is so much happening during the school day and we want to be able to help teachers out by making sure we are aware of these changes. You can contact the office at any time, but it can be busy at arrival and dismissal times. Also, please try to give us at least 30 minutes if you would like to pick up your child early. This way, we have enough time to have them ready and waiting in the office for you.
