DENTAL DAY INFORMATION
5 Essentials Survey
Beginning February 3, students and teachers across Illinois will have an opportunity to participate in the eleventh annual statewide Illinois 5Essentials Survey. This survey is designed to generate a detailed picture of the inner workings of your child’s school. As a parent/guardian, this opportunity will allow you to share your thoughts on the important elements of school effectiveness in a survey about your child’s school. On behalf of the Illinois State Board of Education, the 5Essentials Survey will be administered online by UChicago Impact at the University of Chicago. The survey gathers data related to five indicators that can predict important student outcomes, including improved attendance and larger test score gains. These five indicators that affect and predict school success are:
- · Effective Leaders
- · Collaborative Teachers
- · Involved Families
- · Supportive Environments
- · Ambitious Instruction
Prior research in more than 400 schools has shown that schools that were strong on at least three of these “5Essential” indicators were 10 times more likely to improve student learning gains in math and reading than those that were weak on three or more Essentials.
All teachers and fourth through 12th grade students will be responding to this survey. 5Essentials Reports will be generated for schools if their teachers and/or students meet the response rate threshold of 50 percent. These reports will be sent to schools and districts in May and will also be included in the State School Report Card.
Additionally, Queen Bee has chosen to provide the optional supplement parent survey. If at least 20 percent of Glen Hill parents/guardians complete this survey, a parent report will also be generated. The parent data will not be included on the State Report Card.
Your participation in the parent portion of the survey will help us understand the conditions at your child’s school and guide improvement. Your identity and survey responses will be kept completely confidential and will never be connected to you or your child.
The Illinois 5Essentials Survey for students and teachers will be conducted during the same time (February 3-March 13). The Parent Survey Supplement will be conducted during that same period. To take the survey please visit https://survey.5-essentials.org/Illinois/ and select the appropriate survey to begin.
For more information about the Illinois 5Essentials Survey, or to view previous years’ Reports, please visit https://www.5-essentials.org/illinois. If you have any questions or concerns, please contact UChicago Impact Survey Support at 1-866-440-1874 or impact-surveys@uchicago.edu.
Math Resources Through enVision
Please partner with us by helping your child at home with math. Here are great home resources for math support from the curriculum that we use here at school.
Please click on the family engagement links that support the enVision lessons per topic.
Cold Weather Reminders
As the weather begins to get colder, please send your student to school with a coat, hat, gloves, etc. If there is snow, students should also have snow gear such as boots and snow pants to enjoy the snow during recess. We will go outside unless the Real Feel temperature is below 20 degrees.
We do not have adult supervision before 8:00AM, please know that if you drop your child off before 8:00AM he/she will wait outside.

Car Line/Parking Lot Arrival and Dismissal
To help keep arrival and dismissal safe and efficient for all students, we want to all families to be aware of the following items:
-
Parking lot = Car line only. During arrival and dismissal, there will be no parking in the lot.
-
Walkers may be held briefly. If you are walking and crossing near our crossing guard, please wait until you are directed to cross. The crossing guard will be monitoring traffic flow and may temporarily hold walkers so car line traffic can clear.
-
Right turn only when exiting. Families in the car line will continue to turn right only when leaving the parking lot. Please follow the crossing guard’s directions when stopping or going.
Thank you for helping us keep the process safe and moving smoothly for everyone!
February's Key-Ownership
Ownership – Make the most of every moment
Be responsible for your thoughts, feelings, words, and actions. “Own” the choices you make and the results that follow. Ownership is our willingness to take responsibility for the choices we make. When we take responsibility for our choices, others know they can count on us and we earn their respect. If you tell a friend you’ll meet him at a certain time but you’re two hours late because you were hanging out with another friend, take responsibility for your choice. Don’t make up excuses like “I couldn’t help it ... Billy just wouldn’t let me go.” Take ownership by saying, “I was wrong not to meet you as planned or call you when I realized I’d be late.”
When we take ownership of everything we do and say and stop blaming things outside ourselves for situations that occur in our lives, we have greater control. We may not be able to control everything that happens in our lives but we can control how we respond to what happens. By taking ownership of our actions we create a huge shift in our life.
Ownership is a whole-life concept. We can take ownership of our education, our relationships, our fitness, our fun-all areas of our life. And when we take ownership we take pride and feel confident and fulfilled.
